Hugh Freeze Signs New Deal with Liberty University

Contract Worth $40 Million Through 2030

Buyout Clause Allows for Future Departure

Liberty University has announced a new contract for head football coach Hugh Freeze, which will pay him an average of over $4 million per year through the 2028 season. The deal includes a buyout clause that would allow Freeze to leave Liberty for a Power Five conference program.

The contract, which was released by the school on Friday, October 28, 2022, is for six years and worth a total of $24 million. Freeze's base salary will be $6.5 million per year, and he will also receive a $500,000 annual performance bonus. Additionally, Freeze will receive a $1 million retention bonus if he remains at Liberty through the end of the 2028 season.

The buyout clause in Freeze's contract is for $3 million, which must be paid by the school if he leaves for a Power Five program. However, the buyout clause is waived if Freeze is fired without cause.

Freeze was hired by Liberty in 2019 after a successful tenure at Ole Miss. He has led the Flames to a 17-7 record in his two seasons at the school.

The new contract is a significant investment by Liberty in Freeze and his program. The school is hoping that Freeze can lead the Flames to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2017.
